In order to give prospective clients some insight into the process of commissioning a portrait, I have outlined some important information that covers everything from Consultation to Completion as well as pricing and samples of my past portrait work. Please keep in mind there is a waiting list for portraits. When a client decides to order a portrait, an appointment will be made to discuss the approach of the portrait, the start date and completion date. Consultation After an order has been made, I will meet with the client to discuss the composition of the portrait. During this consultation I will get a chance to meet the subject and be able to find out their interests and personality, enabling me to properly capture the subject on paper. The tone of the portrait will also be discussed; whether it be formal or casual, the types of clothing to be worn, and the setting. Composition Once the approach of the portrait has been decided upon, I will arrange a time with the client to begin the composition. This will involve a few quick sketches to arrange the composition, then it will involve the subject in a photo session to gather visual information for my work back in the studio. A working drawing will then be provided for the client’s approval. A payment of 20% of the total cost of the portrait will be requested at this point to cover costs in the completion of the preliminary drawing. Portrait Upon receiving approval of the drawing, I will begin the portrait and arrange for the client and subject to view the portrait-in-progress halfway through the project. At this point, changes can be discussed and a payment of 30% the total cost of the portrait will be requested. Completion Once the portrait has been completed, the remaining 50% portion of the the cost will be requested. I will make myself available to accompany the client in order to provide them with advice in framing the portrait.
